Dr. Wilma Welsh
Wilma Welsh was born in New Brunswick. Her family moved to Guelph, Ontario, when she was a young child. She has been active in the church since her youth, giving leadership in Explorers and CGIT as well as Church Camping. Wilma was one of the first women ordained as an elder in The Presbyterian Church in Canada (1967). Wilma has retired to her home city of Guelph and is a member of the Kirk Session of Knox, Guelph and representative elder.
Wilma served The Presbyterian Church in Canada for over forty-two years – both in Taiwan and in Canada. Wilma is committed to the world-wide mission of the church feeling a strong call to serve her Church as a layperson. Wilma retired in July of 2002 and continues to share the mission story across the church.
Wilma served for four years as Treasurer for the Women’s Missionary Society and has served as President of Waterloo-Wellington WMS Presbyterial.
Wilma was elected as Moderator of the 132nd General Assembly of The Presby-terian Church in Canada in June of 2006. She is the only lay person who has held this position.
In May 2010 Wilma was honoured by Knox College, Toronto, in the bestowing of the degree of Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa). |
